high risk sports update 2.11.21Dear Rondout Valley Central School District Community:

On January 22, 2021, Governor Cuomo announced that effective February 1, 2021, K-12 Schools could resume higher risk sports. Wrestling, ice hockey, basketball, football, contact lacrosse, and volleyball are among the sports categorized as higher risk. On January 31, 2021 Ulster County Department of Health released revised guidance for School Districts in Ulster County to resume higher risk sports.

On February 2, 2021, the Rondout Valley School District Board of Education passed a resolution approving the District to begin higher risk sports for the 2020-2021 school year, contingent upon the District's ability to comply with all stipulations set out by the NYSPHSAA, Section 9 and Ulster County Department of Health.

Although the Board of Education approved the resumption of higher risk sports the School District’s Medical Director has not given approval for the District to resume higher risk sports. The New York State Education Department requires that a school district’s medical director have the final approval in matters related to the health and safety of students and staff. We know that many student-athletes and their families are disappointed in this outcome, but we will continue to work towards the resumption of higher risk sports when it is safe to do so and we receive clearance from our Medical Director.

Joseph Morgan, Superintendent
