Rondout Valley Welcomes New High School Assistant Principal

Kristen Johnsen has joined the Rondout Valley Central School District as the new assistant principal of Rondout Valley High School (RVHS). She was officially appointed by the Rondout Valley Board of Education at its September 1 meeting.

With nearly 20 years of experience in education, Johnsen joins RVHS from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, where she was the Director of Fine and Performing Arts. Prior to that position, she was a music educator in Newburgh, Nyack Public Schools, and the Warwick Valley Central School District. In her role as Director of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnsen oversaw K-12 curriculum and programming while supervising and evaluating faculty, supporting professional development, and guiding the development of new courses. She also managed the department’s budget, coordinated co-curricular and extracurricular programs and events, and collaborated with fellow administrators to strengthen cross-curricular initiatives and student opportunities.

She earned both her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Music in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. Later, she earned her Master in Educational Leadership and Administration (MSEd) from the College of Saint Rose.

Johnsen is excited to join the Rondout Valley community. “I look forward to building strong relationships with students, families, and staff while supporting a positive and engaging school environment,” she said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this community and look forward to a wonderful school year ahead.”

Outside of school, Johnsen enjoys staying active through golfing, playing tennis, running, and kayaking. She also enjoys playing the clarinet and making music whenever she can.

“We are excited to welcome Kristen to the Rondout Valley,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Spadaro. “Her extensive experience as both an educator and administrator, coupled with her background in music and the arts, gives her a unique perspective on the many ways students learn, grow, and find their passions. Her commitment to supporting students and staff, building strong relationships, and creating meaningful opportunities for students will make her a wonderful addition to Rondout Valley High School.”
