The annual convention, held this year from May 14-16, provided students with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills, engage in hands-on learning experiences, and build meaningful connections within the FFA community and beyond. In addition to leadership programming, students participated in the Convention’s Career and College Expo, where they explored educational and career opportunities while connecting with colleges, businesses, and industry professionals from across New York State.

At the State Convention, members competed in various Career Development Events (CDEs). Rondout Valley senior and FFA Chapter President Addisyn Spano-Meyer won the State Agriscience Research Animal Systems Proficiency Award. This award recognized Addisyn’s dedication, hard work, and passion for agricultural research within the animal systems industry. 

“Through countless hours of research, learning, and hands-on experience, she demonstrated excellence in agriscience and represented our chapter incredibly well,” shared FFA Advisor Mackenzie Lawrence.
 
Addisyn also qualified for the National FFA Convention Proficiency Awards and received her Empire Degree. The degree, the highest State degree New York FFA members can earn,  recognizes dedication, leadership, and commitment to agricultural education and the FFA.  

Rondout Valley student Penelope Roosa-Dunphy won first place in the Animal Systems Division of the Agriscience Fair CDE. The Agriscience Fair gives members the opportunity to showcase their research, scientific thinking, and dedication to agricultural education through hands-on projects and presentations. Penelope has also qualified for the National FFA Convention Agriscience Fair CDE. 

FFA Chapter Vice President Ayanna Brodhead-Wiggins placed second in the State in the Chapter Scrapbook CDE. “She earned this through representing our chapter so well with her creativity and hard work,” said Lawrence.  

“During our time in Buffalo, our FFA members had the opportunity to experience some of New York’s most iconic attractions while exploring exciting agricultural career pathways,” Lawrence remarked. “From touring Buffalo Raceway and meeting the professionals who keep the harness racing industry running, to visiting Niagara Falls and connecting with fellow FFA members at a Bisons game, students gained valuable insight, built lasting friendships, and created memories that last a lifetime.”
