Rondout Valley High School is proud to announce that seniors Anna Weber and Sam Lever have been named semifinalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship competition. One of their classmates—Kenneth Schade—has been recognized as a Commended Student by the same program.
The National Merit Scholarship program is an annual academic competition among high school students. Students who are U.S. citizens, who plan to go to college, and who take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) in October of their junior year are eligible to compete for National Merit distinctions and scholarships. Anna’s and Sam’s PSAT scores made them eligible to continue on in the program, and they are now in the running to be considered for National Merit Scholarship awards next spring.
Although Kenneth will not continue in the 2024 competition, he is part of a select group of thousands of Commended Students across the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
All three students excel both in and out of the classroom. Anna is an artist who plans to study illustration in college. Sam is on the Math Team and is a member of the Science Olympiad Club as well as the National Honor Society. Kenneth is a member of the Math Team, the Science Olympiad Club, the National Honor Society, and plays the clarinet, for which he was selected for the All-State Band.
Rondout Valley High School Principal Jessica Torok commended the achievements of the students while highlighting their characters. “These three are not only impressive in their accomplishments but also exemplify humility and dedication," she said. "They are valuable members of the Rondout Valley school community. We are extremely proud of them, and we look forward to seeing all that they will accomplish in the future.”
